Building A Beautiful Christmas Village On A Budget

village4I had never really thought about Christmas villages until I got married and saw my mother in law’s village for the first time. I fell in love! I had to make one of my own! Then I saw the cost of some of the houses, figurines, etc. and thought…no way can I spend this much. So, I got creative and found other ways of getting my favorite pieces.

There are several ways to get all the pieces you want and not spend a fortune. I have purchased many of my items at garage sales, flea markets, and online sites like Craigslist. Most of all, shop the after Christmas sales! I have bought pieces up to 90% off! I have bought pieces from all of these sources, but I have to say, I purchase about half of my pieces  from flea markets and garage sales.

I am to a point where I have so many pieces, I have to pick and choose each year or my village would take up my whole living room. While that might not bother me, my husband would like a place to sit and relax when he gets home from work each day. lol

Nothing is set in stone when making your village! Use your imagination and make it “your” town! Find your cotton snow on after clearance sales and save for next year. Remember it does not have to be a set “village” piece to look great in your village! Most of all…have fun with it!

One of my favorite things is shopping after Christmas sales and putting things away, then being surprised when I pull everything out the next Christmas. It is like getting new stuff all over again.

This pic below is one of my favorites! I am in love with my little boys playing ice hockey! These came in a set along with the goal net. It was also bought at the close out store in their going out of business sale at about 90% off of regular price! The “ice” is actually a piece of a mirror. A few months before last Christmas we replaced the mirror in our bathroom and a piece of it broke. (yes, I know the bad luck, lol) Well I saved it since I knew I had these little hockey boys. I knew it would be perfect for the iced over pond!

The pic below shows the little road that runs through town! The cars you see are not actually “village pieces” but I found them at a close out store and they were just too cute not to add to my town! The road I also found at the same close out store. They were having a massive sale as they were going out of business so I found several pieces there including the white picket fence that surrounds the town park.

This pic  below is the town park. lol Yes, there is always a story behind my village! I love my Santa gazebo that I purchased at a flea market for around $3 (priced around $20 at the stores). The little duck shot game next to it is from an after Christmas clearance at Walgreens. It is just too cute! There is also a little reindeer ride stand in front. If you look at the bottom left of the pic, there is a little 3 man band. This figurine is very special to me. My MIL gave these to me a few years ago. It ALWAYS has a place in every village. She never gives her village pieces away, so I was very humbled when she gave these to me. They are probably at least 20 years old!

The pic below is one of my favorites that I got a couple of years ago at a garage sale of all places! I am in love with my Christmas tree lot! I priced it at a few stores and it was around $20. I paid $4 for it! Score!!!

This pic below is my Gas station, Fire station, and my Police station. These were new additions this year after getting them super cheap at after Christmas clearances last year. The fire station was from Big Lots and the Gas station and Police station were actually from Walgreens.

As you can see, a Christmas Village does not have to cost a fortune. If you shop right and in the right places, you can score some amazing deals and still have a beautiful and original village for your home!
