If You're Serious About Facing Debt, Answer the Phone

As we continue to work on teaching couples how to work on their household finances, one piece of advice we can give is:  Answer the phone!  If you are serious about getting out of debt, you need to deal with the problems you have gotten yourself into head on.

When I think about the stream of emotions that I used to deal with when I had debt problems, I think I honestly had myself convinced that if I didn’t answer the phone, the debt really didn’t exist.  I had myself convinced that if I didn’t answer the phone and talk to the nasty person from the collections department that the debt would go away.

I believed this all the way up until the first time I was served with papers.  See, it may be a short term fix to a long term problem, but the truth is that it won’t go away.  You need to answer your phone and do your best to keep your cool.  Have an educated, adult conversation to the best of your ability.  If the people on the other end of the phone become abusive or disrespectful, don’t acknowledge their behavior.  The truth is that they are making notes in their system as to how you respond to their calls.  If you answer your phone and try to deal with your situation, you may be surprised at how easy it is.

Another tip is to put correspondence in writing as much as you can.  If you can get an email address from the person on the phone, email is a really good way to document your efforts.  Times are tough right now.  We are 100% committed to helping you live a debt free lifestyle through the use of coupons, but the truth is we can only help you as much as you are willing to help yourself.  By communicating with your creditors, you will be able to stay on top of your current balances and be sure that when you plan your monthly budget, you are doing so as accurately as possible.
