Brandy with Homemade Ginger Syrup

Fresh ginger has a unique flavor that can be spicy in large quantities. This beverage combines spiciness with the sweetness of a simple syrup in brandy for a delicious beverage. Alter the amount of syrup added to the brandy to suit your personal taste, however the basic ratio of one part syrup to three parts liquor is a good place to start.

  • 1/2 cup fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • Brandy as needed
  • Ice as needed

  1. In a small sauce pot over low heat, combine the ginger, sugar, and water.
  2. Simmer a minimum of one hour.
  3. Strain the ginger chunks from the liquid so a clear “syrup” remains.
  4. Refrigerate the syrup until cold.
  5. Fill four glasses with ice.
  6. Fill each glass 3/4 with brandy, then top with the syrup.
  7. Stir each drink to mix and serve.
