Couponing in January

Couponing in January
January is a time of new beginnings. Many of us come up with resolutions that we have no intention of keeping. Others will turn over a new leaf that will change the way they live for the rest of their life. Regardless of where you fit on the spectrum, there is one thing for certain: couponing is still hot!

In 2011 we saw a huge spike in the number of people that started couponing. It lasted into February of 2012 and then started to decline. We had a new generation of “born again” couponers arise in January of 2013 and they were gone nearly as quickly as they arrived. This phenomenon of people seeing “Coupon Jesus” in December and January will probably continue until couponing is gone (gasp!). For those of you that are new to the game, this series is so that you have a few thoughts to ponder as you begin to dip your toe in the water. For those of you that are cagey veterans, I hope you are able to pick something up from this as well!

The Holidays are over. I know, it’s not rocket science. It’s not earth shattering news, but it’s the truth. With another New Years officially in the books, the face of the grocery game has changed once again. As companies’ financial statements start over (just like the rest of us), their budgets have been refreshed and their sales achievements have been reset to zero. As a couponer, this is a good thing! I want companies to come out with all guns blazing at the first of the year so we know what to expect as far as couponing. We are projecting 5 awesome coupon inserts for the first weekend in January 2019!  In addition, the printables that dropped on January 1 will make for a few freebies and maybe even some money makers in the weeks to come. We all have the ammo, now what are we going to do with it?  That’s the million dollar question. There are quite a few things that you should be looking for as you head out to the grocery and drug stores this month.

Buy Turkeys Now

One great way to save money on meat is to buy a couple of frozen turkeys now.  These things are like bomb shelter food.  They keep forever and they will feed an army.  The one place that they will not stay is in the meat department freezer.  Although the frozen section of the meat department is one of the most profitable areas, it’s also one of the areas with the least amount of storage space. I am not suggesting that every single meat department out there will have turkey on sale. I am suggesting that the ones that did a really bad job of ordering will have a ton of leftovers and they will be pricing them to move.  As a meat department manager, if you miss your order on Thanksgiving, you have Christmas to recover.  If you are still long after Christmas, it’s liquidation time. Turkey is also a great way to watch your figure and it will keep the fat out of your refrigerator too, while leaving the money in your wallet.

Huge Sales on Sodas, Snacks, Beer and Chips

As we leave several holidays behind us, we are rapidly approaching what has basically become the newest “national holiday,” the Superbowl. With the Superbowl comes big time sales on snacks. Salty snacks will sell more units during the weeks leading up to the Superbowl than nearly any time during the year.  You will want to pay special attention to the other “party items” that will go with those salty snacks.  Aside from the big sales, marketing reps will be out to make a name for themselves and get their companies some return on their Superbowl advertising dollar. This is awesome when you’re couponing. Combine the sales with coupons.

Keep your head on a swivel as you rush through the store because peelies, tearpads and blinkies will be out in full force.  Of course, the Superbowl is the big day, but let’s face it, there will also be tons of playoff parties across the country every weekend from now until the end of football. To gets some tips on hosting a cost-effective Superbowl party, check out my article, Super Bowl Party On a Budget. Of course I’m hosting another one this year. It’s one of our favorite parties. Even though Buffalo won’t be in it. AGAIN!

Cereal and Healthy Breakfast at Stockpile Prices!

Medical professionals advise each of us to start out the day right with a solid breakfast.  As the population at large pushes to the healthy lifestyle, more people will be eating cereal, oatmeal, bran, etc. than any other time of the year.  Companies capitalize on this by promoting their products through sales and manufacturer coupons.  The first 2-3 weeks of January may just be the right time for you to fulfill your cereal stockpile for the entire year!

Frozen Food Deals Heat Up

Frozen food is my “sleeper section” in the month of January.  Remember, people want to eat healthier.  Others have said that they want to “not eat out as much.” Either way, they want to eat good, they want to eat healthy, they want to eat conveniently and they want to eat cheap and couponing will definitely help with this. Keep a focus on frozen food.

With brands like Healthy Choice, Weight Watchers, Lean Cuisine and others, you can bet there will be ridiculous sales in the frozen food area.  For those that want to “splurge” a little bit and have their favorite appetizers during the big game, you can bet your last dollar that TGI Friday’s. et. al., will capture their fair share of the market by aggressively marketing and pricing their line of products.

Cold and Flu Season is Here

The grocery stores and drug stores both want foot traffic.  Even if it means using meds as a loss leader, they want you in their store. You may be able to stock your entire OTC medicine stockpile in the month of January.  I can tell you that it has come in handy just this past month.  When you already feel like you have been hit by a truck, the last thing you want to do is get in the car and go to get some medicine.  It’s a comforting feeling to know that you can shuffle out to the stockpile in your robe and slippers and find everything you need to be pampered.

I have our meds, our soups, cough drops and even a shot of whiskey out in the stockpile.  A quick trip to grab a couple of things and I am back in bed under the covers praying that I will feel better when I wake up.  Watch these sales every single week.  They are going to be good.  Make sure you are watching the back-end deals through Register Rewards and Extra Care Bucks as well.  They are out in full force in the current ads so I don’t see that slowing down any time soon either.

Coupons for January

Certainly this is not an all-encompassing article, but it gives you some good food for thought as you begin to strategically plan how you will stock your home.  If there are things that you find exceptional deals on, we always welcome your comments and feedback through comments to our post or on our Facebook page.  Through the power of the masses, we will all hopefully save more in 2019 than we have every saved before!
