Couponing with your Spouse

couponing spouseMy husband just LOVES to coupon. Vicariously through me that is. He’s not what you would call a patient man. In fact, when it comes to things like clipping coupons, scouring store ads and mapping out a shopping plan, he has none! He does help me in other ways though. Ways that he’s probably not even aware of. Even if your husband, or wife maybe, says they don’t want to get involved with your couponing, with a little bit of ingenuity, you can come up with tasks for them that will assist you with the process.

Couponing through Osmosis

Probably the single most important thing that I have him do for me is join me in my shopping adventures when I need to do multiple transactions. Many times there will be a deal I want to do and it’s limited to 1 per person or visit, etc., and when I come across this, I simply bring him along. I make duplicate stacks of coupons and give him a basket. We go from aisle to aisle, placing each product in each of our baskets and then head to the checkout when we’re finished.

We each take a line, take our stack of coupons, I let him know how much money he should be spending, so he knows they got all the coupons, and we check out. Two transactions, twice as fast, twice the product haul. If we have more to get, we just head to the next Publix or Winn Dixie or wherever, and do it all again. It makes the shopping go twice as fast and I don’t have to worry about being embarrassed, or called out, going through the line a second time or having to go back later. Best of all, he’s a “couponer” and doesn’t even realize it. He just thinks he’s helping me get groceries.

Do We Have a Coupon for That?

Secondly, my husband helps me by always asking if there’s a coupon for that? He’s called me from the store before and asked me if he should wait to get home and get a coupon first? Or he’ll ask me if the item he’s after will be coming up on sale soon. So cute! Of course my first question is always, “Why didn’t you tell me you needed such & such and did you check the stockpile?” but he’s trying and that’s all I can ask. He may not search for the coupons himself, but at least he remembers that they exist. Baby steps.

It’s All in Your Head!

The third way my husband helps me is all in his head! He doesn’t have any patience but he does love to spend money! By helping me get what’s on my list, throwing it in the basket and paying at the register, he takes part in spending in such a way that isn’t hurtful to the wallet, yet lets him feel as though he’s being naughty spending money. You see, it doesn’t matter what the money is being spent on, to his psyche, he’s spending money and that’s all that matters. We have to buy these things anyway, right? So why not let him do the spending so that his “inner bad boy” can be satisfied? This is a huge help to me because now I don’t have to worry about him spending money on frivolous things away from me. Well, most of the time! His urges have been satisfied by buying the groceries. Silly I know, but whatever I can do to curtail unnecessary expenditures, I’ll do. Plus, it helps to have someone along to carry all of those heavy bags.

celebrate couponingCouponing has become a way of life for me. It has also become a way of life for my husband, although by osmosis. Even if your spouse says he/she wants nothing to do with couponing, I’m sure you can get them involved in some small way. It doesn’t even have to be a way that they’re aware of. One thing’s for sure though, even if they don’t want to be involved in the details, they will love celebrating the savings and THAT we can all participate in. Let us in on some of the ways you get your spouse to help. We’d love to hear about it!
