I want to preface this laundry room countertop post with a special thanks to and her post on Sausha’s Washer/Dryer Pedestals. Go there for the actual designs that I modified for my purpose. I will be mainly discussing my modifications and things to watch out for.

The reason for the laundry room countertop project was to give my wife a place to fold the laundry without dumping it out on the dining room table and it taking 2 days to make it into the closets. We searched the Internet trying to find some plans that 1) we liked and 2) I could execute. We had pinned the pedestals on Pinterest a long time ago because of the basket storage it provided. Then it dawned on me that why couldn’t I just make a second tier and stack them.

First, I had to take the plans and change the measurements to fit the space I had available after we stacked our washer/dryer. Here are the additional parts I needed to stack the washer/dryer:

PETRA 90-2028 10-Foot 4-Wire Dryer Cord
Whirlpool 8541503 Duet and Epic Stack Kit
Dundas Jafine BTD48TC ProFlex Clothes Dryer Transition Duct

I really didn’t have to modify the material list much since my shelf is shorter than the pedestals. I just had to make sure and get enough hardware for all the legs since I was adding 4 extra legs.

Then came the construction of the 3 base frames.

The only modification here was that I made my top frame 4 inches deeper to accommodate for the dryer vent so I wouldn’t crush the vent when the table is pushed against the wall. For my legs I had to use 2 2×4’s glued together because our Lowe’s did not have untreated 4×4’s. This mod is discussed in the original post.

You can see the depth difference in the above picture. The one on bottom will become the top when they get mounted. Now if your laundry room is small like ours, DO NOT mount your tiers together until you move them into the room one by one. Then it’s as simple as putting 2 screws in each leg from the bottom and leveling everything out.

As you can see the next modification was to add the arm extending out from the right side. This part will be completely custom based on the available space you have. So don’t build it until you have the other pieces in place so you can get an exact measurement and frame it just as you did the other 3 tops. We also made it shallower and only went about 16 inches deep.

You will want to level this piece off and mount it into the wall studs and also into top main piece. Next, you want to make sure and install cement backer board for the tile. You can use practically any tile you want for this application. You will probably only need 10-15 sqft of tile. Measure the length x width off all you surface space to be covered and add 10% for waste just in case. You could also just stain/paint the top and not use any tile, but this is the tile we are going to use in our basement so I wanted to work with it on a smaller scale to make sure it’ll be easy to work with.

After the tile is installed you attach your trim so that it is flush on the top. We also added trim to the other 2 levels where the top connected to the 2 x 4 to cover up the seems. Another tip is to stain/paint your shelves before installing in the laundry room. This makes the second coat much cleaner and if you miss a spot it shouldn’t be that noticeable.

Now that it is finished my wife has so many ideas on how to use the space. The shelves are super deep so it would hold several of your stockpile laundry and cleaning supplies. Most likely we will use it for clothes basket organization and a folding table, but this open design can have endless possibilities.

Types of Products I used for the project (all from Lowe’s):

Kobalt 7-in Tile Saw with Stand KB7004
Hitachi 12-in 15-Amp Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Laser Miter Saw C12RSH
Interceramic 6-in x 20-in Colonial Wood Walnut Ceramic Floor Tile 76969535449

Let me know if you take on this laundry room countertop project yourself & how it worked out. ~Mike
