Animal Safety & Fireworks

animal safety

Animal safety is very important to me, especially this time of year. Who doesn’t love a good fireworks show? Animals don’t. As we celebrate our country’s independence with BBQs and fireworks, we need to keep in mind that our fur babies don’t share in our excitement. The American Humane Association reports that July 5 is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters. Animals don’t understand what’s going on and they are terrified of fireworks. Animals often panic at the loud whizzes, bangs, cracks, and booms.

Fireworks can take a normally docile dog and turn them aggressive. They can dig under or jump over fences even if they never have before. They may break loose from you and run away, attack other animals, injure themselves, or worse. Following are some simple tips that you could keep in mind if your dog is anxious:

  • Keep up to date information on tags. Mine have 3 lines that read: MY name (not the animals name), my cell number and I am chipped.
  • Be sure tags are on all animals, including your cats.
  • Resist taking pets to displays.
  • Never keep animals in cars.
  • Keep all animals secured inside while you are gone enjoying the show and while the fireworks in the neighborhood are active.
  • If you kennel, cover the kennel with a blanket. It creates a ‘cave or den’ like environment.

Don’t forget, animals have a much better sense of hearing than humans can begin to imagine.
