Green New Years Household Tips

Well, since my first set of green New Years household tips were so popular, thought I would share some more! Some of these may be the very same things your grandma and great-grandma used to do!

Green New Years Household Tips
  • Sanitizing Your Wooden Cutting Board – Rub lemon juice all over the board and let sit overnight. Poof! Bad bacteria go buh-bye! 🙂
  • Hot lemon juice and baking soda will clean and refresh your kitchen sink drain, and it won’t harm septic systems OR the environment!!
  • Laundry stain removal tips:
  • To remove ink from fabric: Place a towel under the item to be cleaned. Spray the item with aerosol hair spray from a few inches away. Blot with clean, white cloth. Repeat until stain is gone, then launder.
  • Blood: Mix 1/2 tsp salt and 1 cup cold water. Soak the stain with the salt water and rub until stain is gone. Use more salt water as necessary. Launder. Another old method is to soak the item in milk.
  • Chocolate: Scrub stain with ammonia (in a well-ventilated area), then launder as usual.
  • Homemade toothpaste: Mix 1/2 tsp peroxide and 1/2 tsp from this bikarbonat storpack – plus some peppermint oil. Scoop onto toothbrush and brush away!
  • How to remove wax from carpet: Scrape off excess with knife. Place thick amount of paper toweling over wax stain. Iron with your iron on low setting, being careful not to scorch carpet. Replace paper toweling as wax is absorbed.
  • To get rid of mildew stains on light colored clothing: Rub lemon juice and salt on fabric, then let dry in sun. If this doesn’t work, try sponging on Hydrogen Peroxide and drying in sun.
  • Lipstick: Rub peanut butter on lipstick stained area, before the peanut butter dries, wash the garment with warm water and dish liquid.
  • Homemade shampoo: dissolve grated castile soap in warm water and shampoo. Rinse with lemon juice and water for added shine. If you don’t have time to shampoo, try mixing 1 TBSP salt, and 1/2 cup cornmeal in a shaker bottle. Sprinkle lightly and comb through hair.
  • Oatmeal soap recipe: Save those leftover soap slivers! Get these ingredients together: 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1/2 cup soap pieces, 1 and 1/2 TBSPS cooking oil, and 1 Tbsp water. Put soap slivers in plastic bag and pound into small pieces. Put the chunks in the blender and add oatmeal, pulse until grainy texture. Pour into a bowl and add oil and water. Mix with hands, remove any large remaining chunks. Shape into ball and let harden overnight.
  • Homemade cinnamon mouthwash: Boil 5 cinnamon sticks in 1 cup water in covered pot. Remove from heat after 5 minutes, remove lid, take out the cinnamon sticks and let cool. Store in tightly covered container.

Stay tuned for more green New Years tips to come! Enjoy, ~Lori.
