Homemade Potatoes Au Gratin is very to make. Cheese is a staple in my kitchen because it freezes so well and it makes many foods even more delicious. (Shred cheese before freezing). I like to mix different cheeses together such as Gouda, goat cheese, Fontina, cheddar, etc., in many dishes from sandwiches to pasta.

Tonight I used 1/4 c each Parmesan and crumbled goat cheese, 1/2 cup each cheddar, Fontina and Gruyere. Next time it may be a different combination. Use your favorites and you won’t be disappointed. This cheese sauce is versatile and can be used for other recipes too.

Homemade Potatoes Au Gratin Ingredients:
  • 3 cans sliced potatoes, drained, rinsed, patted dry
  • 2 Tbsp butter or buttery spread
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 2 cups shredded cheese
  • 1 1/2 – 2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp white pepper
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 Tbsp parsly
  • salt, taste after adding cheese before adding salt

Directions:
  1. Melt butter in a non stick skillet, add flour and whisk together. Add 1 & 1/2 cups milk, whisk to blend.
  2. Add spices and cheese, mix well. Let simmer about 2-4 minutes allowing cheese to melt. Add more milk a little at a time if sauce is too thick (pasty).
  3. Add potatoes to a large bowl.
  4. Taste cheese sauce and add more seasoning to suit your own taste if needed. Add cheese sauce to potatoes, toss gently to coat and add to a glass 8 X 8 baking or pie dish.
  5. Bake @ 400 degrees for about 30-40 minutes, or until cheese sauce is nicely browned.
