Homemade Taco Seasoning

homemade taco seasoning

Homemade seasonings are  easy to make and so much healthier for you. While store bought pre-made seasonings are convenient and inexpensive they are loaded with salt, sugar and other ingredients we don’t need. So much so that at times the salt is overpowering and can easily ruin your recipe. I began making my own seasoning mixes for this very reason. When using homemade blends add 1 TBSP per pound of meat and taste, add a little more at a time if needed to suit your taste. Homemade spice blends do not contain fillers and thickening agents so you won’t need as much as pre-packaged ones.

Homemade Taco Seasoning Ingredients
  • 3 Tbsp chili powder, plain chili powder is not spicy
  • 2 Tbsp dried oregano
  • 2 Tsp garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp onion powder
  • 2 Tbsp cumin
  • 2 Tbsp paprika, smoked or sweet will work
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp salt, optional
Directions
  1. Mix all ingredients together, label container and store with your other spices.
  2. Add 1 Tbsp at a time to your recipes, stir well and taste.
  3. You can add more, but you cannot easily repair an overly seasoned recipe.
  4. This spice blend works great for burritos as well as many other dishes.
  5. Recipe yields 1/2 cup, can easily be cut in half or doubled as needed.

If you like a little heat in your homemade taco seasoning, I recommend using smoked chipotle chili, 1/2 tsp at a time to the above recipe until you have your desired flavor. This particular chili adds a nice smoky yet not over spicy addition to many dishes whereas cayenne can tend to make a dish bitter if too much is used.

All recipes are only a guideline. Experiment with them until you discover what works for you.

Bon Appetite~ Valerie

  1. Wow, I have all; but, 3 ingredients. I’m going to really try this. It would be cheaper w/all the proper ingredients. Thank You !!

Valerie – Will definitely try this… we need to keep away from sodium…. and my hubby just loves Mexican Food! Thanks for the recipe. I have all the ingredients.

  3. How much do you use per pound of meat?

  4. We love this seasoning. My youngest daughter would never eat the taco meat prepared with store bought seasoning but she loves this stuff. Hubby says to never buy the other stuff. Also great mixed with some salsa and tomato sauce on cooked shredded chicken.
