How to Make Homemade Chalk
I have seen the recipes for homemade chalk and thought, that is too much work and chalk is so cheap. Well, here I am sharing with you our recipe for making chalk. Why? Because it makes for a fun activity with the kids. They learn how things are made and they will probably have a great time. Mine sure did and my oldest is already asking what our next activity will be.
What you will need for homemade chalk:
- Plaster of Paris (can be found at hardware or craft stores for about $5)
- Powder or Liquid Tempera Paint (poster paint)
- Silicone mold, paper cups (whatever you plan to use as your mold)
- Warm Water
- Plastic Containers and Spoons (for mixing)
Directions:
1. Mix together 3/4 cup of warm water with 1-2 tablespoons or a squirt of tempera paint (powdered or liquid). Stir until color is mixed well with water. Then add 1 cup of Plaster of Paris and mix. I used an old yogurt container to mix mine up, since I could throw it away when I was done.

2. Pour the mixture into your molds. Set aside and let dry completely. After a couple of hours you can remove your chalk from the molds and set aside to continue to air dry.
3. If you used paper cups for molds, simply cut a slit on the top and peel it off. Let chalk dry for 24 hours before using.
**Caution: Plaster of Paris is a chemical that reacts with water and heats up to a hot temperature. Please do NOT allow your children to poke their fingers in the chalk mixture when mixing or pouring. Plaster of Paris is non-toxic, so the finished chalk is safe for the kids to handle.
