Keep Your Wireless on Lockdown

Wireless on Lockdown

Wireless Internet at home? It’s almost a given in this day and age. Now with remote working and the emergence of a Hybrid Workplace, it’s more important than ever to keep your internet secure from hackers who could steal valuable information and endanger your income. We all tend to second guess putting our credit card numbers or personal information on the internet. However, when it comes to internet security, a lot of people will not think twice about having their wireless router unsecured. If you’re wanting to read some more on internet security data and practices then continue reading over the different internet statistics and data trends you can find online. So, when I moved into my apartment I went out and got a wireless router since my primary computer is a laptop. I tried to set up a password and ran into a bit of a problem. Instead of doing the “smart thing” and calling customer service, I did the “Cyndi thing” and procrastinated. I did think about it a couple of times and thought “what’s the worse thing that could happen? A neighbor uses it and slows me down a bit.” Well now I know it can get much worse than that.

Wireless Networks Can Be Hacked

One morning I was getting ready for work about 6 AM when I heard a loud banging on my front door. I assumed it was my crazy neighbor I was friends with. I put on my robe, opened the door only to be bum rushed by 15 police officers screaming “Search Warrant.” REALLY! I’m serious! I inquired what for and was informed that it was for downloading of a certain type of inappropriate material on my wireless network. Now at this point the panic attacks started and I almost got sick on the officer.

After they searched my apartment to make sure I was alone, the IT officer that was in charge started asking questions and narrowed the problem down to my unsecured wireless router. He then had to go thru my laptop, external hard drive, my 3 jump drives and all my DVD’s to make sure that I didn’t have the inappropriate material in my possession. After he identified the problem, things calmed down considerably and he was very cool about it. He even made a joke that he would have to arrest me because I had Olivia Newton John songs on my computer and that should be illegal. At this point, I kind of wish I opted for other internet providers such as these at infinitydish.com for instance, at least the network would have come with a password as standard, then I wouldn’t have even had to endure that horrifying experience.

Secure, Secure, Secure

Of course I was cleared of everything and they contacted my landlord about the situation since I lived in a complex. This was one of the single scariest situations I’ve ever been in! I found out that the search warrant was a “no knock” warrant so they could have just busted down my door. Also, I had been under surveillance for weeks.

So while your worse concern in having an unsecured wireless router may be slower speeds, take it from me it, can be soooo much worse than that!! Don’t think that if you live in a rural area and don’t have close neighbors that you are safe either. The officer informed me that a lot of illegal downloads happen by people driving around randomly and finding unsecured signals. This is “safer” for them since they can’t be linked to the area since they don’t live close. If your wireless is unsecured I strongly encourage you to get it protected TODAY!

Cyndi, When I got my laptop a month or so ago, I had realized that when my brother installed my router for my IPad, he ddnt even mention anything about securing it!! So when I was setting up my laptop it said I had an unsecured router. I tried figuring it out, but being the non-tech person I am I couldn’t do it after trying several times. I posted on TCW wall about it and wizkid Heather Commet messages me. Next thing I knew I was on the phone with her husband and he went into my computer and set it up for me!! I am so grateful to her and her husband and so blessed to be part of such an amazing community!! 🙂

  2. WOW, That’s messed up. I think that I would faint; but, know I couldn’t because of the kids. I’m glad that it got resolved and funny how he stated w/Olivia being illegal. I wonder what he had to say about your couponing, lol. I’m glad that it’s all resolved and my hubby is the one that helps me set-up the computer and we both work together to make sure that everything is secure. Thank You for a great article !!
