Lemons as Cleaners

Lemons Household Cleaners

Since we’re on the topic of green cleaning, I thought I would share my top 10 uses for Lemons. This citrus is not only loaded with vitamin C, they also have an antibacterial effect that can be quite handy around your home. Best of all, they’re non-toxic and you can buy them inexpensively almost anywhere! The best Lemons have smooth, oily skins and are a nice yellow with no green on them. Allow the lemon to reach room temperature before juicing. To make it easier to squeeze, roll it on the counter with your hand to loosen the inside a bit. Now on to the fun stuff!

My Favorite Tips for Using Lemons:

1) Air freshener. Mix equal amounts of lemon juice and water in a spray bottle, and mist around the room for a cheap, natural air freshener. This could be a good solution for those who would like to use more natural products around the home, but it’s worth keeping in mind that air fresheners without harmful ingredients are now quite common in stores these days.

2) Use vinegar and water spray to clean your home? Add juice of some lemons to make it smell a little less harsh and add some cleaning power!

3) Half a lemon stored in your fridge should help neutralize those odors.

4) Wanna polish those copper pans or chrome fixtures? Mix a paste of equal parts lemon juice and baking soda and rub lightly with soft cloth.

5) Cut a lemon in half and rub it on those faucets or sink sto help remove limescale. Rinse well.

6) Add 1/2 cup lemon juice to the washer for bleaching power. Hanging clothes to dry in the sun will also help.

7) Hot lemon juice and baking soda poured down the drain will help keep those clogs at bay.

8) Rub the juice of lemons on your wooden chopping boards and leave it on overnight to help kill any bacteria. I use bamboo cutting boards, which are said to have antibacterial properties anyway.

9) Lemon juice applied to wasp stings and mosquito bites is said to help relieve the discomfort.

10) 4 Tbls of lemon juice mixed with 1/2 gallon of water makes an excellent window cleaner. PLUS your home will smell fresh.

Well, of course I had to add a number 11! This is my favorite use for Lemons. 🙂

11) Lemonade!!! Here’s a wonderful Lemonade recipe:

  • 3/4 to 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water (for the syrup you will make)
  • 1 cup lemon juice
  • 3 to 4 cups water
  1. Make the syrup by slowly heating the sugar and water in a saucepan until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  2. While the sugar is dissolving you will want to squeeze 4-6 lemons, or enough to make the 1 cup of juice.
  3. Add the juice and the sugar water (syrup) to a pitcher. Add 3-4 cups of cold water to desired strength.
  4. Refrigerate 30-40 minutes and enjoy!
  5. If the lemonade is a little too sweet, add a little more straight lemon juice to it.
  6. Serve over lots of ice! 🙂
