Savory Hearts

Fresh veggies, and delicious, grated cheese wrapped up in a pie crust shaped as hearts. These Savory Hearts are the perfect addition to your Valentines Day dinner. Serve them as an appetizer, or as the main dish. However you serve them, they are sure to be a favorite!

Savory Hearts Ingredients:
  • 1 box ready to bake pie crust
  • 1 egg for a wash
  • ½ to 1 cup hard fresh grated cheese
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1 cup fresh baby spinach and Swiss Chard
  • ½ cup small onion
  • ¼ chopped olives
  • 4-6 mushrooms
  • olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste

Savory Hearts Directions:
  1. Place pie crust on counter to come to room temp while you prep and sauté the vegetables.
  2. Thoroughly wash and dry all of the vegetables, chop and place in a pan with a dash of olive oil.
  3. Sauté just until everything is fully cooked (reserve the greens until the last minute of cooking to).
  4. Preheat to 350 degrees when you are part way through filling the hearts.
  5. Roll out the pie crust on a lightly floured board then cut hearts about 3 inches big.  You’ll need two hearts per tiny pie.
  6. When all of the hearts are cut out, use a fork to score the edges of one side on all of the hearts.
  7. Place a tablespoon of the filling into the center of each heart, top with a sprinkle of the cheese.
  8. Add a small amount of the egg wash over the scored area on the bottom of the pie crust that has the filling on it.
  9. Carefully fit the top heart over the filling, then use a fork to press the two heart crust edges together.  Make sure there they two halves are completely together before placing on baking sheet in the oven.
  10. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes depending on how hot your oven runs.
