Do-It-Yourself How To Fix A Squeaky Door

We all know that one of the most annoying sounds within a house is a squeaky door. The door hinges being clogged with dust, dirt, or grime usually causes this annoying sound. Another factor that may also cause the door to squeak is the hinges being rusty or misaligned to the door frame.

You can get rid of that annoying sound without having to take the door out of its frame or even opening the tool box. It should be noted that this is only a temporary fix to your squeaky door problem. So if you happen to have a squeaky door that is bothering you, here are some common household products that you could use right away to remedy the problem.

1. Vaseline– Vaseline is a petroleum based product and will eliminate the squeaky door problem. Simply dab a little on your finger and apply to the hinge pin. Once you have done that, open and close the door several times to work the Vaseline down through the hinge pin.
2. Cooking Oil– Another quick fix for squeaky doors is cooking oil. Take the cooking oil and put some on a paper towel. Rub it into the top of the hinge pin and the spot where the hinge is attached. Work the door back and forth to let the cooking oil penetrate the hinge.
3. Old Crayons– We all seem to have wax crayons in the house. These work wonders on squeaky doors. All you need to do is to crayon the hinge from top to bottom. Work the door back and forth to let the wax penetrate the door.

Using the above products will eliminate the sound of a squeaky door temporarily. If you are looking for a more permanent solution, especially if your hinges are rusty, you’ll need to take the door off its hinges and set it aside. Then you will need to remove the hinges from the door frame and take a piece of steel wool and scrub away the rust that has built up on your door hinges. Once you have that done, put the hinges back on, and re-attach the door to its hinges.
