Guest Post By- Stormy Matlick I was tired of people telling me I needed to lose weight. I decided on August 18, 2009 to try my luck with a medical weight loss facility so I called to schedule an appointment. As my luck would have it they did not have an opening until October 9th, but at least I knew I was in! The time between the appointment setting and the actual appointment felt like a lifetime! I went to that appointment with a great deal of apprehension because I was spending money I thought would be better spent on another purchase. I was so excited when I walked in the door of that facility even though I knew that I was going to have to face the dreaded scale. The scale didn’t lie and it was a major embarrassment to know that someone besides me knew how out of control my weight had gotten. This time was different though. Instead of telling me I was severely obese, the staff shared with me ways I could get my weight off and gain control of my life again! The appointment lasted about an hour and even with all three of my kids in tow I felt like I had learned so much and I was ready to get to work. I went home and started writing down everything I ate. I also restricted my calorie intake to 1,000 per day but soon after learned from a dietitian that I should have more so I increased it. I also did things like following the rule of one starch per meal, drinking lots of water and walking a lot. Two weeks passed and I went to my next appointment with more confidence because I felt I had done enough to shed some pounds. I was lighter and so was my wallet! After the second visit I decided not to go back, but my journey didn’t end there! I told myself I was not dieting; I was making a lifestyle change! I took the knowledge I had gained and began further educating myself by reading different diet books to see what worked and what didn’t for my new lifestyle. I was on a mission to get not only myself but my husband and children healthy as well. I can tell you not everyone we know was on board with this decision, but I knew if I had the support of my husband, it was possible. Although I am far from where I need to be, almost three years later I am definitely much healthier, happier, and closer to my goal. It hasn’t been easy but it has been worth every minute for me to see how far I have come and to know it is all a result of hard work and education. Who knew a phone call and $140 could make such a difference in my life?!
