Set the Timer for Thrifty Thursday

Thrifty Thursday timerFor this week’s installment of Thrifty Thursday, I thought I’d share a great way to save big bucks monthly in your home. This is something we have utilized for nearly 8 years now and I can’t even begin to add up the thousands of dollars it’s saved. Put a timer in!

How long does it take you to shower? How long do your dishes take to do? Do you shower 24 hours a day? Then why heat your water 24 hours a day? We put a timer on our water heater years ago and it’s saved us thousands of dollars over the years. Here’s how they work: They have set “times” for your heater to actually be on and heating the water. The tank will keep the water hot long after it clicks off, leaving you with a supply. We have ours turned on about 8 of the 24 hours in the day – 4 hours in the morning so I can shower, run the dishwasher, do any cleaning I need to do, and 4 hours at night so I can bathe the kids and my husband can shower when he comes home from work. There is an override switch on it so you can click it on when needed.

Our old house had electric everything and our bill was astronomical. The very first month we put it on (on a VERY inefficient water heater, I may add), we compared electric bills, and we saved around $35. That was consistent through the 6 years we lived in that house. Our average savings was $35-45 per month, with comparing it to the first year with no timer. When we moved last year, the first thing we did in the new house was put one on. Right away we saw a savings of $45 the first month.

You don’t have to be an electrician to install these either. They come with a set of directions and are just two wires to hook up. It will take a novice less than an hour to hook it up.

These paid for themselves the first month we had them. You can pick them up for between $30-$65 online, and around $70 in store. This is the timer that we have.
