Tuesdays Tips – Spend vs Save

Tuesdays Tips

That’s it! I’m done, I quit! Tuesdays Tips today is about how I threw in the towel and went back to my favorite makeup foundation. I tried, I really did, and I tried for a full year, but I just could not find anything close to my Estee Lauder Double Wear Ivory-Beige #10. How much did I spend trying to save money? I have no idea. I will tell you that it was well over the $36.00 I spend about every 5 months on my old faithful though. Sometimes spending a few dollars more on something that you truly like, and you know it will do the job for you, is perfectly OK.

I can afford $0.24 a day to feel confident in my skin. I swear, when I applied my foundation I thought “what was I thinking?” It was as if I slipped into my favorite flannel jammies on a cold winter night; pure comfort!

What I discovered on my journey

Being a makeup artist, I learned long ago that it’s important to find something that works for you and stick with it. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on every item you use. I discovered that I really like Almay mascara and Physicians Formula loose powder. I haven’t found an eyeliner that makes it through the day without needing to be touched up, but I can live with that until I run out. For years I have bought professional or department store quality makeup and skin care because I can depend on it. Not a lot of savings on those products. Or is there?

When you consider how long ‘high end’ products last, it breaks down into pennies per use. You can score savings by shopping when stores offer their “gift with purchase” promos that run every quarter at one store or another. Before you know it, you have accumulated makeup and skin care without paying anything additional. You can also get good quality makeup at Ulta and they offer perks that help you save on a regular basis. I prefer Ulta’s selection of gel eyeliners over everyone else and I can easily find unique colors of stick liners and shadows there.

I don’t have the time nor the desire to constantly be fixing my makeup throughout the day and frankly the more you have to use the faster you have to replace it. So what are you really saving?

Moral of Today’s Tuesdays Tips?

Cutting corners isn’t always a good idea. It’s OK to try new things. It’s OK to try and save money, but there comes a time when you have to slam on those brakes and realize that you really aren’t saving anything if you don’t like, or aren’t using, what you are buying.

My sincere apologies Estee, I won’t stray on you again…

  1. 🙂 I feel the same way about estee lauder mascara. It’s the only one that doesnt clump and actually makes me look like I have lashes. I beg the little freebie tube off my MIL when she buys makeup and perfume and gets the “free gift bag” of samples. Otherwise I have to bite the bullet and buy it for myself. But sometimes you just have to splurge on yourself!

  2. youre exactly right! glad you realized this before spending way too much more! im a slave to certain items and over the years have found id buy something cheaper again and again only to find out i don’t like it. its cheaper just to buy what i like. now that i coupon its alot cheaper but thankfully the items i like i can buy at the drugstore! if you’re not already you might want to check out a couple of coupon sites as they are always posting new deals…and ive seen lots of things on the more expensive beauty items! also sites like bestmark pay you to mystery shop. the very first shop i did was at an estee lauder counter! i walked out with a $25 item, which I was reimbursed for within 2 weeks!

  3. Amen! On another note have you tried neutrogena gel eye liner? I think its gel. I love it and it stays true all day i have never had to touch it up is the only one i use.
